Magnesium chloride is predominantly found in the market in the form of magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl₂·6H₂O), available in industrial and food grades. It appears as white flakes, granules, or powder, is highly hygroscopic, and readily soluble in water, releasing a large amount of heat during dissolution.
Food-grade magnesium chloride is primarily used in the coagulation and molding of traditional tofu. Industrial-grade magnesium chloride is mainly used in the production of magnesium oxychloride fireproof boards, magnesia cement, and other magnesium-based building materials. It is also used as a snow-melting and dust-suppressing agent for roads and as a refrigerant in small and medium-sized cold storage facilities (eutectic temperature approximately -33℃). Anhydrous magnesium chloride is mostly used in oilfield drilling mud preparation and as a raw material in magnesium smelting.
Compared to calcium chloride: magnesium chloride brine has a higher eutectic temperature (-33℃ vs -51℃) and weaker low-temperature refrigeration capacity; in building material applications, the two systems differ—magnesium chloride is specifically used in magnesia products, and its overall corrosiveness is lower than that of calcium chloride.

Applications of magnesium chloride:
1. Food and Soy Product Processing: A traditional coagulant for brine-cured tofu, supplemented for fruit and vegetable preservation and aquatic water mineral replenishment.
2. Magnesium Building Material Manufacturing: Preparation of magnesium oxychloride cement; production of fireproof boards, greenhouse frames, lightweight partitions, and other magnesium oxide products.
3. Road Winter Maintenance: Snow melting and de-icing on roads in normal temperature areas; daily dust suppression and soil retention on mining and urban roads.
4. Small and Medium-Sized Low-Temperature Refrigeration: Preparation of brine refrigerant for use in small and medium-sized cold storage facilities and ice rinks.
5. Oil and Gas Metallurgy and Water Treatment: Oilfield drilling mud preparation; electrolytic smelting of metallic magnesium; flocculation and impurity removal from industrial wastewater.
How to Choose Between Magnesium Chloride and Calcium Chloride?
Low Temperature Limit: Magnesium Chloride < Calcium Chloride;
Soy Products: Magnesium chloride is the sole choice for brine-cured tofu;
Building Materials: Magnesium chloride is used in magnesium oxide fireproof building materials, while calcium chloride is used for antifreeze and early strength enhancement in plain concrete;
Corrosivity: Magnesium chloride is generally less corrosive than calcium chloride.
Magnesium chloride has a wide range of applications, including setting tofu with brine, manufacturing refractory building materials, and suppressing road dust. We have ample stock of flake and anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is low in impurities and dissolves smoothly. Bulk purchases receive even better pricing.
