Calcium chloride (chemical formula: CaCl₂), anhydrous molecular weight: 110.98) is a highly hygroscopic basic inorganic chemical raw material, mainly classified into anhydrous calcium chloride and calcium chloride dihydrate. Commercial forms include powder, granules, flakes, and blocks, and grades are divided into industrial grade and food grade.
This product is readily soluble in water, releasing a large amount of heat during dissolution, and its aqueous solution has an extremely low freezing point. It possesses functions such as drying and absorbing moisture, snow melting on roads, refrigerant refrigeration, accelerating concrete setting and preventing freezing, and calcium supplementation. It is widely used in industrial gas drying, winter road de-icing, concrete antifreeze, food preservation and hardening, cheese processing, and wastewater treatment.

Applications of Calcium Chloride:
1.Road Maintenance
Calcium chloride is an ideal choice for snow melting and de-icing in winter. Its aqueous solution has a eutectic temperature as low as -51℃, and its snow melting efficiency is significantly better than that of salt-based de-icing agents. It also exhibits lower corrosivity to road surfaces and plain concrete. During the non-snowfall season, it can be used for road spraying to suppress dust, and is widely used in winter maintenance and daily dust control of airport runways, highways, and urban roads.
2.Drying and Dehumidification
Anhydrous calcium chloride has excellent hygroscopic properties: at 25℃ and RH 80%~90%, its moisture absorption can reach over 200% of its own weight; in a high-humidity environment of RH 95%, it can reach 300%. It is a highly efficient desiccant for industrial gas drying, warehouse moisture prevention, and container shipping, effectively preventing precision instruments, electronic products, food, and textiles from becoming damp, moldy, rusted, and deteriorated.
3.Construction Engineering
Calcium chloride is used as an early-strength agent and a setting-promoting and antifreeze component in concrete. It accelerates cement hydration, significantly shortens setting time, helps lower the freezing point of mixing water, and allows concrete to quickly accumulate early strength at low temperatures, resisting freeze-thaw damage and ensuring winter construction progress. Suitable for cast-in-place plain concrete, precast unreinforced components, and shotcrete slope protection.
4.Refrigeration Industry
Calcium chloride aqueous solution is the mainstream refrigerant in medium- and low-temperature refrigeration systems such as cold storage and ice rinks. Its concentration can be flexibly adjusted, with a eutectic temperature as low as -51℃. It has excellent thermal conductivity, low cost, and is suitable for large-scale industrial refrigeration applications.
5.Food and Water Treatment
Food Processing:
Used as a hardening preservative for fruits and vegetables, a cheese coagulant, and a calcium fortifier. It can also be used for firm tofu, dried tofu shaping, and water quality control in beer brewing (traditional soft tofu generally uses magnesium chloride as the main coagulant).
Water Treatment:
Removes fluoride and phosphate ions from wastewater through calcium ion precipitation, and can simultaneously adjust pH. Widely used in the pretreatment of wastewater in the chemical, electroplating, and phosphate fertilizer industries. For high-phosphorus wastewater, attention should be paid to the impact of phosphate on defluorination efficiency, and process parameters should be adjusted accordingly.
